so this is sort of off-topic, but irked me enough that I feel compelled to write about it.
We never watch much network TV. One of the new shows on CBS- 'Jericho'- especially made me not want to watch network TV. I thought at first "why are they doing a show about the aftermath of a nuclear strike?" And I still don't know why...but I found out that supposedly terrorists are responsible and it's not exactly a 'Cold War' type scenario when there was legitimate fear of something happening. Still I think it's kind of a bad idea to base a show on, but that's just me.
So we never have seen it in it's 3 weeks of existance. Until last night we were channel surfing, there wasn't anything much on, and I stopped there to check out how bad this show is. And in the 5-10 minutes a conversation occurred during the show that, well basically pissed us off. I found the website for the show and left CBS feedback. the address is http://www.cbs.com/primetime/jericho/ and this is what I wrote:
"I would like to file a complaint against the showing of Jericho. First and foremost, I feel that this show would have been better off broadcast in the 80's during the Cold War and not in 2006. That's my opinion. My complaint however is about a scene in tonight's episode (10.11.06) in which a discussion was taking place about two people who hadn't returned to town. One gentleman mentioned something about 'the tanks', the 2nd gentleman mentioned "it's probably just the National Guard (or Reserve..whichever..)". The first man then goes on to say something about 'but it could be China, Iran, Al Qiada...' STOP. CHINA?? Since when was China our enemy and when have they wanted to invade and nuke us? As a proud American and father to a child from China, I am disappointed by the inclusion of China within the context of the show. I believe the writer was irresponsible (as well as the people who proof the scripts) but more than that; just plain ignorant. Or perhaps he or she confused China with North Korea? Perhaps all Asians look alike to this person so it doesn't matter?
Give us all a break and pull this crap off your schedule. Thank you."
My point is this...people watch alot of TV. Alot of people may not know what's going on in the world...or at least just know what's being reported. People tend to take things they hear on TV, whether it be the news or a television program (reality shows for example) and believe them or base some part of their knowlege or opinion on them. "hey Bob...did you watch (show title) last night? do you think that'd really happen?" could be one conversation...
I'm not about censorship by all means...hey, I'm a musician...but I do believe that we don't need much of the crap on TV and we definitely don't need this crap filled with irresponsible and ignorant scripts and reporting.

In an effort to save for our adoption we cancelled our cable, it’s really expensive up here! We don't get any channels at all and I'm so surprised by the fact that we don't miss it. We LOVED TV and always had it on, now I hear about shows on prime time and I think "how stupid" but the truth is I if we had TV we'd probably totally get sucked into it. I don't mean to come off all "Holier than thou" I mean, we get movies and TV series off Netflix, but it has been nice taking a little break. However as soon as we get our little one I'm sure we'll get cable again. The call of Sesame Street and Dora the Explorer will be too sweet!
:o)
liz-
definitely children's programming will become a staple around our place as well. and definitely cartoons...i loved them and actually still like to watch some once in awhile. Obviously the "old school" ones like Bugs Bunny and Tom & Jerry, etc. hehe
We hardly ever watch "network" shows anymore and pretty much stick to all the Discovery channels, Nat'l Geographic, some music vids, and definitely hockey. I don't think you came off as 'holier than thou' at all. I think more people should 'take a break' once in awhile...like you did. :)
